I just received an audio-technica ATR2100x-USB microphone that has a USB-C connector, and comes with a USB-C cable that I use to plug into my Galaxy Note 9. Oddly, video recording is no problem, but audio-only recording generates a constant very loud buzz (the aforementioned "screeching" sound).
For me, the phones mic is used even though I have my buds pro in my ear and can hear the call through them. I have tested this by using the voice recorder then walking in to a different room, it is definitely using the phones microphone even when my earbuds are in my ear. Such a pain and almost useless to use as hands free.
